Facebook-owned WhatsApp introduced a feature called Live Location for iPhone and Android devices that lets you share your real-time whereabouts with friends and family.
“Whether you’re meeting up with friends at a festival, letting your family members know you’re safe, or sharing your commute with your spouse, Live Location is a simple and secure way to let your family and friends know where you are,” a WhatsApp spokesperson told PCMag in an email.
To try it out, just open a chat with an individual or group, tap “attach,” choose “location,” and select “share live location.” Then, select the amount of time you want to share your location (either 15 minutes, 1 hour, or 8 hours) and you’re all set.
Once you share your location, each person in the chat will be able to see where you are in real-time on a map. If multiple people share their location, they will all be visible on the same map. You can choose to stop sharing your location at any time, or just let the timer expire.
WhatsApp says there’s no need to worry about snoops sleuthing your location when you’re using the feature. “Like all communication on WhatsApp, Live Location is end-to-end encrypted, so only you and the people in your chat can view it,” the company expalined.
Live Location rolled out to WhatsApp’s iPhone and Android apps on 18th October and should reach everyone in the “coming weeks.”
Meanwhile, if you like this idea for tracking your kids and also happen to be a Sprint customer, you might also want to check out the carrier’s new Safe & Found app, which can help you keep tabs on what your kid is doing in the real world and online.
